Hello,

I hope I am in the right area, I have some red cherry shrimp, please move this if its wrong.

This is my tank which I have not had very long, it has 10 red cherries in it and ten Malaysion trumpet snails but I hope to breed some more of each.

What does everyone think?

Morgan.   :-*

Shrimp outgrow their old outer shell and shed the old one when it does not fit properly anymore.   :o

Ok. Lets get started. What you need first is moss.Any of the types will do, Java, Christmas, any. It grows easily and with minimal light. Shrimp need to feel secure especially when they moult so you need places for them to hide. Get yourself some Subwassertang, another undemanding plant. It is actually a freshwater seaweed. It will attach itself to anything you want in the tank a rock or whatever and the shrimp will clean it and graze on biofilm that will grow on it. This one is a must for shrimp tanks. Cholla wood. It is basically dried cactus and shrimp love it too hide in and graze on organisms that grow on it. Enjoy your cherries it will not be the only shrimp you keep. :D

Could anyone tell me please, how long I have to wait for my baby cherry shrimp to hatch?
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: tva351 02, 2019, 12:55:51
Morgan,I get my cholla wood off ebay. You might be able to get it at a pet shop but I  don't know, sorry.   :(
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: tva351 02, 2019, 01:14:05
Cherry Shrimp eggs take about 3 weeks to hatch. You will notice as the female carries them around with her, moving them around all the time cleaning them, they will get darker and darker until they eventually hatch. The young are exact miniature versions of the adults but just paler. You might be lucky to see them hatch but more likely it will happen in cover away from prying eyes. :D

Hey Morgan you can still get some decent size pieces of Cholla wood down at Seaview aquarium on Anzac Highway. Cholla is no longer imported into Australia due to too many hoops people have to jump through to import it so what is around is pretty much it.

Thank you so much sabertooth, I rang them and they have some left, so off to the shops I go.  :-*

What is the problem importing it do you know?

Apparently they kept being stopped at quarantine and it all got to hard to bring it in. The guys at Seaview will tell you the story they were one of the last shops i found that were not cut down into tiny pieces and stock levels were decent enough to pick and choose from. I drove to quite a few shops in Adelaide finding only the odd piece here and there. You never know what you are going to get online as they are pretty much stock photos, I like to take the tape measure and pick some good ones personally.

Ok, still no cactus wood but I have a piece of drift wood, is that ok to use?  ;)
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: tva351 07, 2019, 12:32:59
Absolutely. Driftwood is a great base for biofilm to grow. Put a piece in every shrimp tank you have. It will probably leach a little tannins , but it  is not harmful. Just yellow the water a little. A great mineral for shrimp and will clear your water is montmorilinite rock. I have some in every shrimp tank
I have. ;)

Thank you to everyone giving advice about the cholla wood, I now have a great piece of it floating in my fish tank and when it sinks to the bottom I will post a picture of it.  :-*
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: tva351 12, 2019, 08:37:11
That's great Morgan. What I usually do if it is a long piece of cholla wood is cut it into 8-10cm lengths and put 2 pieces into every  tank. Personal choice of course. I find then it goes further that way and I don't have to buy so much. No rules tho, Morgan. You do whatever you want. Glad you have some in your tank. Your shrimp will love it. :D

Thank you tva351, they are all over it even though its floating on top, and OMG another shrimp has eggs, that makes two now.  :P

Thanks for the great advice, now I have 10 ramshorns, 5 blue and five pink.  :-*
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: morgan16 20, 2019, 03:10:45
Ok, my cholla wood finally went to the bottom and it took about four days to sink. OMG I can't believe whats going on in my tank because I started with ten adult shrimp and after a few weeks I now have dozens of little tiny ones also. Some are tiny and then there are others up to about 5 or 6 mm and there are two more berried females not far off I think. As well as that, my trumpet snails are breeding fast also with lots of little ones crawling up the glass. Its going so well in my little tank that I have enough confidence now to think about getting another bigger one.  :P

Here is a piccy of my cholla wood and a few tank creatures.

And I forgot to mention, I got a new plant (called pine needle) and the next thing I know is a number of snaily/beetle like critters RUNNING around the tank, these guys are really fast, anyone know what they could be?

Sure sounds like it, not to worry though as that is actually good for your tank and kind of replicates wild conditions.
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: morgan16 04, 2019, 09:16:08
OMG, not only do I have baby shrimp and baby trumpet snails, I now have what I believe are ramshorn snail eggs deposited on the glass all around the tank and just in the last day or so.

Started with 10 and if they all hatch out, there will be 100, I'm gonna need a bigger tank.  :P
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: morgan16 13, 2019, 04:53:08
Ok, now i'm seeing things (I think) ... just went to feed the shrimp and snails and darned if I did not see the most weird creature swimming around the tank (for the first time).

It's about two centimeters long and a very bright green, has big eyes, a forky tail and walks around on six legs, wtf?

Can anybody please help me identify this ???  :o

How did I get it and where did it come from AND WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?  :'(

LOL, dragonfly larvae
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: tva351 13, 2019, 06:02:06
Yep dragonfly larvae. Net it, get rid of it. Before they become dragonflies they live in water in this form and they are aggressive nasty hunters. Get it out now Morgan. What have you put in your tank recently?
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: morgan16 13, 2019, 06:55:52
Thank you sabertooth and tva351 for this information, I will get rid of it tomorrow. Have not put anything in the tank for a couple of weeks when I added the ramshorn snails but I put them in one at a time and I did not see anything like this thing.

Did'ya get that nasty thing out of your tank?
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: morgan16 02, 2019, 12:26:44
I'm backkkkkkk, howdy peep's I have been away on holidays to FNQ and had a GREAT time.  :-*

A friend has been looking after my shrimp tank for me and I have returned to the sight of shrimp everywhere, which is amazing because I only started with ten and I have not had the tank all that long. I attached a pic but that is not all the shrimp, this is one little group but there are LOTS more.  :o

On the subject of that awful dragonfly thing I posted about, even though I tried hard to find it I never saw it again after that one day and my friend says she has not come across it during the time I was away, go figure.

I hope everyone and their shrimp are well, I am off to read some of your posts, byeee.  :-*

Ok, now is this a coincidence or what? I have NEVER seen a dragonfly here until this morning when I discovered one of the cats playing with this.

HAS THIS MYSTERY BEEN SOLVED?
: Re: My Shrimp Tank
: tva351 03, 2019, 05:37:40
That's where your dragonfly larvae went. It turned into a dragonfly and flew off. They  spend the majority of their life in the water so it was in your tank for a long time,or someone else's if you introduced a plant or something. Nature is amazing isn't it?  :D
