Plants - Substrate / Emersed plants
Last post by dmdr - February 17, 2019, 08:18:16 am
I'm interested in people's experiences with growing plants emersed (ie. roots underwater, leaves in the air). Currently I've got some sweet potato vines growing out of one of my tanks, in order to keep the substrate clear for my hypothetical future corys, which has been going well so far (well, it's only been two weeks).

Anyway I'm keen to know if anyone here has grown anything like this and if so, what plants you've tried -- especially species that can be found at Bunnings etc., because as we all know aquatic plants aren't cheap! Most of the yanks I've seen do this use something called pothos vine but they don't seem to have that at my local Mitre 10, or sweet potato. So yeah, I'm wondering about alternatives.

Plants - Substrate / Re: Driftwood

This is an awesome question and something I was wondering about myself! All the driftwood I've got I bought from petshops, but I'm assuming that most species of eucalyptus are right out as a lot of them are very sappy woods and most will probably leech toxic oils into your tank even when they aren't (I believe many species have mildly toxic bark, which helps prevents other plants from growing too close and so competing for nutrients with the tree). Acacia species often extrude a lot of sap too so I guess they wouldn't be great in the tank either. Acacia gum is edible though, and is quite possibly the most boring tasting foodstuff I have ever eaten, so they might be OK.

I suppose you'd have to stick to non-native species. If you live in Adelaide there's a lot of hawthorn up around Mount Lofty which is apparently OK to use. Haven't tried it myself though, obviously.

Hi. I saw the ads on Gumtree for FREE STUFF in exchange for 30 posts and so here I am. I'm actually interested in communicating with Adelaide aquarists as well (for plant exchanges etc.), so my reasons for being here aren't entirely cynical!

Anyway yeah, I'm a kiwi who has been living in Adelaide now for about 12 years all up. I started keeping fish in about August last year so I'm pretty new at this. Right now I've got 2 tanks -- one's a standard 2 footer with a thick-lipped gourami in it (aka 'the jungle'), the other's a bespoke 80x25x30 (by me, so it's a bit rubbish. It doesn't leak though) bookcase tank with a 'river tank manifold' under the substrate and a dozen cherry barbs inside. This one's still pretty new and isn't quite done yet (no lid, not fully stocked etc.). Because I need to make 30 posts before I can claim my FREE STUFF I'll post pictures and things separately. What was that I was saying about my reasons for being here not being entirely cynical? Oh well...

I don't keep shrimp but I'm interested in putting some in with Vincent, my gourami, in the hope they'll compete for food with the ramshorn snails I've got in there with him (they're breeding out of control a bit and have scoffed all the floating plants I put in there). I suspect he'll eat them but for free I can take the chance -- plus I bought him some live crickets a few months ago and he wasn't keen on them, so I might get lucky. I'm also interested in the MTSes on offer -- my newer tank has a sand substrate and so will need extra aeration.

That's all for now. Post count +1

How do you breed shrimp? How do you make sure they stay 'pure' as I've been told you can't just breed them, it takes dedication, time, planning and no inbreeding etc.

What wood can you pick up in a forest and prepare for your tank?

I don't have many fish Jess but those I do include a male betta named Aurora, he's a tough little fella who hates snails.   :D
